Woodies In The Wild
WHY WOODIES
We love classic cars like the Camaro, Firebird, that cool ‘55 Chevy and seeing them drive by definitely get’s our attention, we will also be turning our heads when a cool woodie passes by.
“Woodies were first built because it was cheaper to build a wood body car in the early days than a steel body car” Think back to horse carriages.
Woodies were popular wagons and sedans in the 30’s ’40’s and early 50’s from Manufactures like, Chrysler with the Town & Country, Ford the popular Country Squire “is there a theme here” Chevy and many more manufacturers had woodie cars in their line up along with third party companies and individuals creating these cars with wood exterior panels.
Surf Culture
In the 50’s the new car market for the woodies became less popular for most new car buyers, being less popular for the main stream, the cost for these used cars came down and the secondary market for these charismatic vehicles became popular in the 60’s with the California surf culture.
Cars with character
Along with being popular with the surf culture they were also well known and loved by most everyone as they were so prevalent in the music and surfing movies that a lot of us watched and listened to growing up.
That makes it that much more special seeing these gorgeous cars driving along the California coast and another reason why events like Woodies On The Wharf are so popular with most anyone whether you are in to classic cars or not.
