Amphicar

Have you ever been to a lake and looked across the water and see that the other side of the lake looks more beautiful than the side that you are on and wish you could get over to the other side, well if you drove an Amphicar (amphibious car) to the lake that wouldn’t be a problem.

Amphicar model 770

Amphicar it’s A Little Different

Half boat, half car these really are some remarkable machines, the first time that I seen one it was driving down the road and I noticed that this kinda different looking car had numbers on the side just like boats are required to have.

As this unique looking car passed there it was twirling in the breeze, it had propeller’s on the back and this really got my attention and wanted to find out more about these half boat, half car vehicles.

Come to find out Amphicar’s were manufactured in the early sixties. They were not very popular they made less than 4000 Amphicars. Even though they didn’t catch on they were sure interesting to say the least.

Can you imagine back in the sixties, sitting on the dock maybe on the bay just watchin’ the tide roll away and here comes this car heading right towards the water and there it goes as you watch it roll away. You must of thought... well you know it was the sixties in America after all.

Amphicar Built 1961-1968

Amphicar’s were produced in Germany from 1961-1968 they were mostly imported in to the United States. Sporting a British made Triumph Herald motor with a whopping 1147 cc , 43 hp the Amphicar had a top speed of 70 mph on land and 7 mph on the water that’s where they got the model 770 for the Amphicar.

The motor powered the wheels on land and also the propellers when it was in the water, these cars were not hot rods by any means but they got the job done. You didn’t even need to bring your boat and your car for a day at/on the lake.
