Bonneville Or Bust, A Taste Of The Salt

Bonneville Speed Week

Arriving in Wendover for Bonneville Speed Week Thursday evening and headed straight to the Bonneville Salt Flats, the drive down the salt is surreal similar to the El Mirage dry lake bed but different. The salt is flat and barren, it looks like snow or Ice with mountains in the distance.

First thing was to go through the pit area to check out the cars and talk to the owners and crews, they were excited to be out on the salt, and it seemed like most, if not all, thought they had a chance at a record this year. People worldwide were at the event; some came to race and others to watch.

People from Canada, France, Germany, and all over the US. Les Triplettets 2 Bonneville, a group from France, had a fascinating sidecar, the Saline Error 404 sidecar. They were having a blast on the salt, talking about their bike, travels worldwide and racing these incredible machines. It was fun talking to them about their adventures.

There were some fantastic hotrods Friday on the salt, some with historical significance, especially to their owners. The 1933 Omaha Coupe built back in '54 was last out here on the Bonneville Salt Flats 65 years ago when it ran 165. It's been great following this one on Social Media and seeing the history of the car and people remembering the car from the past. Finally, seeing it in person was a blast.

Another fantastic hotrod on the salt was a perfect shade of orange 1931 Ford Coupe that the owner calls Peaches. The '31 was on the cover of Oct/Nov '21 Ol' Skool Magazine.

Unfortunately, we had some rain come in Friday night, and the word was there wouldn't be any racing on Saturday. However, it seemed like everyone was making the best of the situation, exploring the small town and other nearby places and hanging out.

If you bring out your hotrod, get some incredible photos of it near the old abandoned barracks buildings near the airport.

It rained again on Saturday evening. Eventually, the course was underwater with no chance of drying out in time, and they had to cancel the races. However, for most of the spectators that came to the event, the spirits were high; no doubt it was rough on the racers that prepared all year long for this event.

Wendover, Nevada, is not a large city. Still, it has what you need, numerous large casinos, a few fast food places, restaurants, gas stations, and a grocery store. Nugget is where many of the hot rodders showed off their rides, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

There are a few hotels in the area, but try to book before they fill up. There is camping as well; most people camp at the bend. The bend is the last curve before the salt; there is plenty of room to camp. But, be forewarned; if it rains, this area becomes a mud pit, which happened during this year's speed week.

I'm not particularly eager to show people's hardship. Still, I took a few photos of the mess so readers of the blog can understand what can happen if it rains and you're camping out there.

There are other places to camp on higher ground if the weather doesn't cooperate; there are numerous BLM lands in the area where camping is allowed. There is also a KOA campground in Wendover, Nevada.

A few steps from the Nugget casino in Wendover, Nevada, you are in a different time zone in Wendover, Utah, and no casinos. The Bonneville salt Flats is a short 10 minutes away from the Nugget Casino in Wendover, Utah. The salt is amazing, and that's where all the race action is.

Bring sunglasses; you will need them when you are on the salt. If you forget your sunglasses, someone on the salt will have them for sale; when the sun is out, you can't see without them.

This event is the best get-together of Land Speed Racing, hot rods, and fun in the US and possibly the world. I'm already looking forward to next year
