Stepping onto the historic base, surrounded by a breathtaking display of vintage military aircraft, tanks, and trucks, one can't help but feel the weight of history and the aura of a truly unique location.
And when the engines fire up, and the smell of burning rubber signals the start of old-school drag racing, it's as if a portal to a bygone era has been opened right before your eyes. The combination of this rich historical backdrop and the exhilarating racing action creates an experience that's nothing short of extraordinary.

The blend of seasoned racers and newcomers is a remarkable aspect of the Eagle Field Drags. Some participants attend every race, their dedication, and passion evident in their unwavering presence. They're the heart and soul of the event, helping keep its spirit alive. Yet, equally fascinating are the first-timers, wanting to experience the magic for themselves. Brian's Model A
One of the cars that caught my eye at this year's Eagle Field Drags was Brian's 1930 Model A. He was joined by his son, Ryan, for a memorable racing experience in this vintage gem. Brian acquired the car about four or five years ago when it was already in decent shape. Interestingly, its origins trace back to the dirt tracks of Southern California. The Model A looked stunning; however, as the race began, it became apparent that the car wasn't finding the traction it needed on the track. Undoubtedly, Brian will be fine-tuning and making adjustments, preparing for his next appearance at the Hot Rod Gathering in October.
The resurrection of "Straight-2-Hell"
This weekend marked the first time we had the pleasure of seeing Jeff Jones' astonishing 1929 Model A truck, affectionately known as "Straight-2-Hell." Jeff's journey with this remarkable vehicle dates back to 2007, when he built it as a rat rod. At that time, Jeff would take the truck everywhere, and it even caught the eye of Old School Rods Magazine.
However, in 2014, tragedy struck as Jeff had an accident, wrapping the truck around a telephone pole and breaking 13 bones in the process. Following a long recovery, Jeff was determined to return to his passion for building custom vehicles. Over the years, we've seen his creations like the custom copper-endowed sedan and The Dirty Dodge Coupe at Eagle Field Drags.
About four years ago, Jeff embarked on the incredible journey of resurrecting the mangled "Straight-2-Hell" Model A. Seeing it in person at the event was a testament to Jeff's unwavering spirit and dedication to building and racing hotrods. His story reminds us that despite adversity, the love for these fast and classic cars can lead to triumphant comebacks. Eagle Field Drags is where such triumphs come to life.
Ashlyn's fearless victory
Eagle Field Drags isn't just an event for seasoned racers; it's also a fantastic, family-friendly experience. As a youngster, there's nothing quite as exhilarating as witnessing these magnificent cars thundering down the drag strip. And for the participants like Ashlyn, racing a JR Dragster is an unparalleled thrill. Ashlyn competes in open comp, where her fearlessness shines through.
Despite her age, she boasts a wealth of experience on the drag strip, fearlessly taking on seasoned veterans in the open comp. During the weekend, Ashlyn achieved a remarkable victory, proving that age is no barrier to skill and passion. Her journey is a testament to the electrifying and inclusive nature of the Eagle Field Drags, and moments like these make this event so memorable for all who attend.

Fun times for all
In addition to the fascinating lineup of participants, it's worth noting that the legendary Gene Winfield graced the Eagle Field Drags with his presence. Gene's contributions to the world of custom cars are unparalleled, and it's always a privilege to see him at these events. While Gene checked out the action, he also took a keen interest in the thrilling Jet Car that stole the spotlight at the event.
The Jet Car, weighing 2700 lbs., is powered by a Westinghouse engine flown in a McDonnell Banshee Navel Fighter. The 10,000-horsepower jet car uses about 28 gallons of diesel fuel per run. Jeff Ataman, the owner of the unique dragster, frequently brings the Jet Car “The Beast” to Eagle Field Drags.
Eagle Field Drags is more than a local event; it's a regional gathering of motorheads. Most participants come from all corners of California, but you'll also spot visitors from Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. This geographical diversity adds an extra layer of richness to the event, as it becomes a meeting ground for automotive enthusiasts from across the Western United States.
