The Rhythm Collision

The Rhythm Collision is one of those events that we all look forward to, with the perfect combination of music, hotrods, and old-school classics.

As soon as I arrived Friday afternoon, a familiar car was sitting outside that put a smile on my face that lasted all weekend. Guido's metal flake Root Beer Brown 1923 Model T that he calls "The Stinkin' Hot Rod Lincoln" the first time I saw Guidos 23T was at RPM Nationals. There is more of this 23T on the RPM Nationals blog post.

The Rhythm Collision - 1923 Model T

Early Saturday morning, the top two levels of the Marriotts garage started filling up with hotrods, gassers, and old-school classics. Before long, rockabilly music filled the event as DJ Flashback George was spinning the 78s.

The cars that come out to these events in SoCal are some of the best around. One of the cars was Don Waldron's 1930 Ford Model A. The ride height and small skinny tires in the front looked fantastic on this Roadster.

When checking out the roadster Don asked "what did I do wrong," nothing I said; it's perfect that way it is. Don noted that some say they would change the headlight housing color. The headlight housings are painted red and were from a Model A truck. I would leave them the way they are. The car's red headlight housings, primer body, and unpainted fenders had a garage-built feel that looked great on this one.

Don started building the car back in '65, '66 and ended up building and re-building through the years until 2018, when he finally got the Model A to where it is today. Don says that The Rhythm Collision will be the last show that he will be taking the Roadster. He said that he sold the Roadster to help fund his grandkids collage, but there is a slight chance he might show it at the GNRS at the end of the month; that's when the new owner will be picking up this sweet ride. Glad that I was able to see Don's Roadster at The Rhythm Collision. It's not too often that you see a blown model A; it was a fun one to check out. You can see more of the cool roadster in issue 5 of Speed And Kulture.

After checking out Dons Model A, I headed up toward the upper level and heard a car coming up from behind me. The car sounded like a high-performance muscle car; to my surprise, it was a Model A that had a perfect look. It turns out the 1930 Model A was a stock barn find, and now it has a ZZ 350 crate engine, and to call it a sleeper would be an understatement. I would leave this one exactly as it is, wire wheels and all.

I continued walking up to the next level where the Lords cars club was parked, and they had some fantastic cars as well. Lords cc Riverside was the host club for the car show event. On the top-level Duke’s cc Riverside County had some of their gorgeous rides.

The car show was great, vendors were selling their wares, drinks and there was also a BBQ area to grab a bite to eat.

About midday, Rockin' Coyotes took the stage as everyone gathered around; they were great and fun to watch. After the band played for a while, the Lords Riverside took to the stage and handed out the show awards.

Then the Cacklefest got everyone's attention as the gassers fired up their engines. First was a 1965 Chevy Nova. The 1st generation Nova "Chevy II" was painted white with "Motor City Shaker" on the door. The gold wheels that fit this one perfectly, the Gasser was gorgeous. Then the 1965 Pontiac Tempest fired up; the Gasser looked like a drag car right out of the '60s with the polished Rocket Racing Wheels and a custom grille.

The Gassers were loud, but our hands instantly went to the ears when the Ford Anglia drag car fired up. This car was amazingly loud, especially in the parking garage. The drag car is not only loud; it's fast. I saw the 1948 Anglia named "Rat Bastard" on the drag strip at the October Hot Rod Gathering event at Eagle Field Drags.

The Rhythm Collision is about the music; it's in the name. This years event started with a meet and greet on Thursday. Friday and Saturday night after the car show, Marriotts was rocking' the music with DJs, live bands, dancing, and of course, the alcohol was flowing. The ladies were in their 50's attire; it was a blast. And that wasn't all, the fun continued thru Sunday with what they called the Hangover Tiki Pool Party.

The Rhythm Collision is a fun three-day event with DJs, live bands, and awesome cars. I can't wait for the next Rhythm Collision event.
